ST. PAUL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

May 1, 2006 – 6:30 p.m.

Present:  Daryl Olszewski, Gerry Burant, Kerri Anderson, Chris Fogarty, Cheryl Kaminski, Jeff Madunich, Linda Krowsky, Ann Pawlak, Vince Sciano, Karen Bushman, and Pat Sciano

OLD BUSINESS

Daryl recently heard from two groups interested in utilizing the school building.  Discussion was held regarding:

1.            Kilmer Alternative School – This is an alternative high school in the MPS system, which is looking to lease space and operate two shifts of 170 students.  At the end of one shift, students leave for a work program and are replaced by the next shift of students.  MPS would be responsible for bringing the building up to code.  MPS does employ their own building engineers, and they would be responsible for the upkeep of the building and grounds. The archdiocese would insure the property with any remodeling being insured by MPS.  This proposal needs to go before the MPS School Board for discussion. Contract length may be three years with the option to renew.

2.            ATLAS Preparatory Academy – ATLAS is a private school (non-religious) funded primarily through school choice, which currently leases space at IC and a Lutheran church in the area.  Their total enrollment is 500 students, K-4 through 10th grade.  Children from K-4 through fifth grade would utilize our site.   The school currently pays $10,000.00 a month rent at IC and might possibly be able to pay as much as $12,000.00 per month to lease our building.  They may be able to use our building as it currently stands, or if they need to make improvements; grants would cover the cost of the improvements.

THE DISCERNMENT PROCESS

Karen Bushman facilitated the discernment process for the Parish Council and School Advisory Board.  The first discernment was for the Parish Council.  All nominees were welcomed with Karen leading the opening prayer.  The nominees were:  Sue Kakatsch, Katrin Kempowski, Paul Anderson, and Richard Kucharski.  Current parish council members introduced themselves followed by introductions of the nominees.  The discernment process was explained and each nominee gave an explanation as to why he or she was interested in serving on the Council and what gifts and talents they thought they could bring to it.  Questions from Parish Council members were then asked of the nominees.  Discernment then took place after the nominees were escorted from the room.  The decision was made for Katrin Kempowski and Paul Anderson to serve three-year terms, Richard Kucharski will serve the vacated one-year term, and Sue Kakatsch will serve as the alternate Council member.  All of the nominees accepted their nominations and all were thanked for their involvement in the process.

The second discernment process was for the School Advisory Board Representative.            The applicants were:  Sharon Tomski, Sue Dolkiewicz, Susan Kruse, and Rachel Czeszynski.  The same process was used for the School Advisory Board nominees as stated above.  Sharon Tomski was discerned to serve a two-year term as STAA School Advisory Board Representative for St. Paul's.  Sharon accepted her nomination.  All participants were thanked for their involvement in the process.

The meeting ended at 9:20 p.m.

Vince will give the opening prayer at the June 5th meeting.
